Profile of Carlos Madrid III Library

Brief history
Carlos III University of Madrid was founded in 1989 with the objective of offering an efficient, high quality public service. A service which would further the Right to Education as it is set out in our Constitution. A model of educational integration within the global, unifying concept of Science and Culture. The philosophy that has guided the University since its beginnings is one of creating fully responsible, free-thinking people with a sensitivity to social problems and an involvement in the concept of progress based on liberty, justice and tolerance.

The Academic staff include 1.375 people for a students community of 18.348 in 2005.

The University model is decentralized, located in 4 different Campus for Faculties of : Social Sciences and Law, Humanities and Communication, High Polythechnic School and Tourism. Main Campus are located to the South industrial area of Madrid.

The Library provides service in every Campus with a total of 22. 304 m2 for: 1.998 study places and 356 desktops.
The library also provides Group and Individual working rooms and some incipient Learning workrooms for teachers.

The subject profile of every Campus library is the following:

  • Biblioteca de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y Jurídicas:
    Social Sciences: Law, Economics and Finance, Business and Organization, Politics and Sociology , European Union and a special collection of Humanities.
  • Biblioteca de la Facultad de Humanidades, Información y Documentación:
    Information Science, Librarianship, History, Linguistics and Literature, Art , Philosophy, Journalism.
  • Biblioteca de la Escuela Politécnica Superior
    Engineering, Computing, Mathematics and Physics.
  • Biblioteca del Campus de Colmenarejo
    Law, Economics and Finance, Business and Organization, Tourism.


Digital Library Projects
The Carlos III University has a project in the framework of the Strategic Plan: The development of an institutional repository coordinated by the Library. At the moment, the University thesis are being digitalized.

The Library participate in Madroño E-Ciencia Project in order to create a Madrid Network repository for the intellectual production of Madrid academic and research community.

Economics collection profile
The collection of Economy begins in 1990 at the same time that was created the Economics Department.

The selection and acquisition is made on current funds, mainly original editions published in the last two years. The historical collections, in the case of monographs, come, basically from private libraries. The retrospective serial collection is available by electronic access (I.E. JSTOR).

The collection includes, almost exclusively, documents published in USA, UK and Spain in the following subjects: General economics, Macro and microeconomics, Finance and taxation, Accountancy, Statistics and Econometrics, Economic History, Business, Labour and Welfare Economics.
The main language is English followed by Spanish.
