Erasmus University Rotterdam Library

Erasmus University Rotterdam has been in existence in its present form since 1973. Its history, however, dates back to 1913, the year in which the Netherlands School of Commerce was founded through private initiative with broad support from the Rotterdam business community.

At that time a library was founded, that would evolve to become the University Library with the foundation of the Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1973.

The University Library moved to its current location in 1968. In 1970 the automated book storage system 'Randtriever' was installed, through which the library drastically reduced the amount of space needed for book storage. An addition to the building was added in 1986. The library serves over 15,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff.

The library has over 900,000 books and 5,000 journal subscriptions. Almost all of the subscriptions are available in electronic form. The Library’s core subject areas are Business Administration, Economics, Statistics, Law, European Integration, Healthcare Policy and Management, History and Art, Philosophy, Social Sciences and Medicine and Health Sciences.

The Library is an Institutional Repository for the European Documentation Centre.

The more than 220 databases that the library subscribes to are exemplary of the focus points of the collection, and range from business data to medical information.

Digital Library Projects
The University Library is involved in a number of projects:

RePub, electronic publishing at the EUR

Erasmus University Rotterdam considers it important to provide open access for the academic output of its staff, at least at one electronic location, available to everyone. This location is RePub, the EUR repository. Other universities do exactly the same thing with the publications of their academic staff. The result in the long run is worldwide open access to scientific information, in accordance with a distributed model.

The EUR expects their reseachers to make their publications available to this repository, in addition to publishing them elsewhere.

The EUR is convinced that such availability of academic output via the Internet is becoming increasingly important to guarantee academic visibility. Clearly, proper registration, digital availability and maximum access of the university’s academic output provide a demonstrable contribution to the impact scores of her publications.

Research in Semantic Scholarly Publishing
In collaboration with the Free University Amsterdam, the Knowledge Media Institute – Open University UK, Elsevier Science, and faculties at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the University Library will develop a new model of publishing that is not static and linear, but dynamic and multidimensional.

The model allows the visualization of cognitive and semantic relational patterns, and it will have the possibility of domain-specific cases in different areas of science, including an editorial logistic route, authoring instructions, and a prototype of a new publication and communication environment.
