European University Institute

The European University Institute located in Florence, is an international doctoral and postdoctoral research institute, established by the EC Member States in 1976.  Today, 560 PhD candidates, 100 post-doctoral fellows and 60 Professors work in the fields of Economics, History & Civilization, Law, and Political and Social Sciences.

125 doctorates were awarded in 2007.  The EUI has a prestigious interdisciplinary research centre: the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.  In 2006 the postdoctoral Max Weber Programme was launched.

The EUI Library
The collection consists of over 550,000 volumes with a steadily increasing number of electronic resources, including more than 6,000 electronic journals.

The EUI Library grows by approximately 11,000 volumes per year.  Special collections include statistical data, official publications of the European Union and other international organisations, working papers, and a large collection of microforms.  145 work spaces are available for Library users – supplemented by many more around campus.  Scholars also have access to the Historical Archives of the European Union, which is administered by the EUI.

The Economics Collection
Combined holdings in Econometrics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Statistical Theory constitute approximately one quarter of the Library total.  Economics is particularly well represented among online journals and online databases.

The collection of economic literature at the EUI has grown steadily over the past thirty years – guided by expert librarians and international faculty.  Today, economists have access to a carefully-selected collection of journals, books and economic data – and a steadily growing number of e-Books.  [Read the Collection Profile.]

Support services for economists include: a Reference Library for seminar support and an in-Department library help-desk.  Since 2003, the Library has issued a weekly Economics & Statistics e-Bulletin providing updates on collection development, new acquisitions, and how to access data from EUI Library resources and the world wide web.

The Collection and services are used by Professors, Fellows and PhD Candidates in the Economics Department – and also by post-doctoral fellows working on economic-related topics in the Max Weber Programme, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and other academic departments.

An introduction to the EUI Economics Collection is given on this Library page.
