University College London (UCL)

UCL was founded in 1826, and its library first opened in 1829. It now serves a staff and student community of over 24,000. More than a third of its students are engaged in graduate studies, and almost half of those are pursuing a research degree.

The university is organised in eight faculties: Arts & Humanities, Built Environment, Clinical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Laws, Life Sciences, Mathematical & Physical Sciences, and Social & Historical Sciences.

Collections
The library was established in 1829, and its printed collections now total over two million volumes and are housed on 19 sites. Individual collections stand out for their ability to attract researchers from all over the world, including the site library of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, and the Dutch, Scandinavian and Hebrew and Jewish Studies collections. Other significant collections include the unique archive and manuscript holdings of the library’s Special Collections.

In recent years the printed collections have been enhanced by a wide range of material in other formats. Library Services now subscribes to approximately 6,500 ejournals and provides access to them as widely as the licences allow. Collections of audio-visual material are maintained where appropriate to support teaching and research.

The Economics collection comprises approximately 12,000 monographs and 200 subscriptions to print journals; around 300 journal titles are available online.

More information on UCL's economics collection profile can be found here.

Institutional Repositories
UCL Eprints is an "open access" repository that collects the work of UCL researchers and makes it freely available over the web.

Digital Library Projects
SHERPA-LEAP is a University of London consortium, led by UCL, which has created institutional repositories at seven institutions. UCL is also a partner in the ShibboLEAP project (concerning controlled access management for institutional Eprints servers) and SHERPA DP (examining digital preservation for institutional repositories).

LIFE (Lifecycle Information for E-literature) is exploring and developing a life cycle approach to costing digital archiving for e-journals.
