Profile of University College Dublin Library

Brief history
University College Dublin was established in 1854 and is now the largest university institution in Ireland with over 21,000 students. It provides programmes of study and research in a wide range of subjects: Agriculture, Architecture, Arts, Business Studies, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, Social Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. Its main campus is located at Belfield, about 5km from Dublin city centre.
Collections
The library's holdings consist of over 1,000,000 volumes and 6,000 current periodicals, with smaller collections of microforms and other print and non-print formats. Almost 80% of stock is on open access. The stock includes some 30,000 early printed books and special collections. Online access is provided to an extensive range of databases, information services, electronic journals, and subject guides.
While the Library's economics collection is modest by international standards, it offers comprehensive coverage of Irish material in economics and related subjects.
Details of the library's provision for economics can be found in the economics subject portal at http://www.ucd.ie/library/subject_portals/economics/index.html
Institutional Repositories
The Irish Social Science Data Archive, which is managed jointly by UCD and the Economic and Social Research Institute, provides access to data from surveys, census material, geographical databases, etc.
The library is a European Documentation Centre and a national depository for United States government publications (now mainly in microform); it is also a legal deposit library for Irish publications.
Digital Library Projects
PADDI (Planning Architecture Design Database Ireland) is a bibliographic database providing access to information on the build environment in Ireland. It is a joint project of the libraries of University College Dublin and the Queen's University of Belfast.
IVRLA (Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive) is a project to digitise research material in print, graphic, audio and video format from four separate repositories in University College Dublin (the Library, the Archives Department, the Department of Irish Folklore and the Department of Modern Irish), and to provide an interactive web-based interface for researchers.
